Copper Top: Take a Dip in the Sky

June 13, 2018

Many New Yorkers make a bee-line for the train, bus or Jitney as soon as the warm weather hits, leaving muggy city streets for relaxing weekends spent by the water. As more new developments include resort-style lounges with indoor and outdoor pools among their copious amenities, the need to flee the city for water’s cooling effects may soon be a distant memory.

At American Copper, the visually arresting rental building designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS Development, residents have their choice of pools (yes, plural), stunning backdrops, and more luxurious conveniences, all in the comfort of their homes. While all of the building’s amenities are jaw-dropping—notably the tri-level Skybridge which includes a lap pool, state-of-the-art fitness center, and juice bar—it’s the newest amenity to open, an endlessly stylish roof deck, that is home to some particularly summer-worthy features.

Fittingly named “Copper Top,” this landscaped rooftop retreat is in a class of its own. It answers the question: What is it like to swim in the sky? One of the roof deck’s most stunning features is a chic, inground lounge pool that adds brightness and depth with its striking turquoise geometric-patterned tiled floor. Recline in style on the modern daybeds and double chaise lounge chairs surrounding the pool, where the only difficult decision to make is whether you prefer eastern, northern, or southern views.

Refreshments are a key component of any successful summer lounge experience, and Copper Top’s design and furnishings have clearly taken that into account. Sleek stainless steel grills are thoughtfully incorporated into the rooftop’s layout, surrounded by chic bench seating for rooftop dining under the stars, and a sky bar and open-air lounge provides a swank and exclusive alternative to a crowded Manhattan bar. Residents have the option to rent out the bar and adjacent lounge, sure to wow guests with its dazzling backdrop and confirm that everything tastes better 42 stories above ground level.

While the furnishings, landscaping, and thoughtfully-curated amenities are undeniably impressive, it’s the choose-your-own-breathtaking-view feature that makes this space truly unparalleled. For classic New York views choose the western sundeck, which offers a direct shot of iconic city structures like the Empire State Building and the Metropolitan Life Tower off Madison Square Park. Facing south, sweeping views extend out to downtown Manhattan and beyond, and northern sights stretch up from the UN Headquarters. Perhaps the most impressive views can be seen poolside, where the calm East River floats past the rapidly transforming Williamsburg and Greenpoint waterfronts, the glassy towers of Long Island City, and all the way up to the northern tip of Queens and beyond.

Though Copper Top sits above so much of the skyline, its atmosphere creates the distinct feeling of being right in the middle of the city’s constant buzz and vivacity. Its views capture a modern portrait of New York, showcasing its architectural landmarks, ongoing development across the five boroughs, and the elegant waterways that create its unique shape.
